Brian Elliott 2016 Playoffs

We’re now a little under a month away from our first sights of Lord Stanley and the guys with white gloves. There are a few teams that stand out atop the pack. There’s also quite a few shattered bracket pools throughout the United States. Nobody saw Chicago going out in the first round. Nobody saw LA getting dominated like they did against San Jose. Nobody saw the Predators knocking off the Ducks. Well, that all happened, and the now-best were once considered “the rest” entering the postseason.

Let’s take a look at the favorites heading for the Stanley Cup Finals before the month is out.

2015-16 NHL Stanley Cup Finals Futures May Odds Update

Western Conference Favorite – St. Louis Blues (+200)

The Blues are a total feel good story.

First, their beloved NFL team was ripped out of their hands and moved to Los Angeles. Then Tony X discovered the Coolest Game on Earth. A lot more things happened in between, but those are the highlights we’re going with.

Led by goaltender Brian Elliot, the Blues have gone on a miraculous run. They’ve gone to two game sevens in a row against Chicago and more recently Dallas. They’ve fought off the naysayers and even blew them kisses in the process. Led by leading playoff performer Vladimir Tarasenko’s 13 points through 14 games, St. Louis has been an unstoppable force. They’re a very skilled, yet gritty team. They have size and they have strength – two commodities that you just cannot have enough of in the NHL Playoffs.

Watch out for the Blues in the Western Conference Final and potentially the Stanley Cup Final as well.

Eastern Conference Favorite – Pittsburgh Penguins (+175)

The Pittsburgh Penguins road to the Eastern Final has been a little shorter, but has still been just as difficult. They took out the New York Rangers in five games to open their playoff run and more recently defeated the Washington Capitals in six. So, while the team is a little more rested than their Western foes, they have absolutely still been put through the ringer.

The Rangers and Caps each took runs at the Pens superstars and some players were even suspended in the process. The team couldn’t be shaken though. Behind rookie goalie Matt Murray’s Eastern-leading 272 saves through the first two rounds, Pittsburgh has looked solid. Nobody really gave them a chance a month ago, but they’ve sure changed their tune now.

…hence Pittsburgh’s league-leading futures odds.
