2016 NHL Stanley Cup Futures April Update

Washington Capitals

The Caps are currently the heavy favorites to take the next step and put a ring on it this spring. Led by Alex Ovechkin’s 50-goals and Braden Holtby’s 48-wins this past season, the Caps sit comfortably as the +380 no brainer pick.

They also start the playoffs out against the eighth-seeded Philadelphia Flyers who limped their way to a postseason berth. They’re also one of only two teams, Detroit being the other, who ended the regular season with less goals for than goals against.

Dallas Stars

It’s good to see the Stars back in the mix. They’ve gone absent for a while as far as NHL relevancy goes, but after their Western Conference-leading 50-win season they are right back in the mix. They are also the conference favorite moving forward with Jamie Benn’s 89-point season leading them into the playoffs. They are currently listed as +500 to take Lord Stanley’s holy grail.

Pittsburgh Penguins

This one is a tad surprising. The Penguins had quite a few pros and cons to their season and have entered the playoffs with a backup goaltender. Marc Andre-Fleury is on the shelf with a concussion and Evgeni Malkin’s status is still uncertain, although we’re hearing he’ll “return soon” – whatever that means.

The Pens though are hot entering the postseason. They went 8-2-0 in their last ten, which definitely adds some fuel to their +650 fire.

Chicago Blackhawks

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, the team of the century (thus far) is right back in the thick of things. The Blackhawks’ season had its ups and downs. With Patrick Kane breaking the 100-point plateau (106 total) and taking home the Art Ross though, these guys are once again a shue-in come late May. Watch for the Hawks at +700 to be in it till the bitter end.
