The favorites this year are the almost the same as the clubs that finished the year in October last year. There are a few clubs that have fallen off the map a little prematurely early on – most notably the defending world champion Kansas City Royals. They’re currently just two games over .500 and sit in the AL Central. With that said though, a few notable names are in the mix along with a couple once-considered long shots. Let’s take a look.

2016 May MLB World Series Futures Update

Favorite – Chicago Cubs (+300)

The Chicago Cubs almost made it to the big dance last year before being upset by a red hot Daniel Murphy and the New York Mets. The Cubs currently have the best run differential by an absolute landslide! They are +119 runs for as opposed to runs against. That’s +68 more than the next closest in the NL (Giants with +51) and +41 more than the Red Sox (best in AL with +78). They are on an absolute warpath and are once again led by last year’s best pitcher Jake Arrieta. JA is currently 9-0 and is on an absolute tear. He’s one of many reasons sportsbooks are rating them so high this early in the year.

Next Best – New York Mets (+900)

The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs put up one heck of a series last year and NL pennant run to the finish. This year New York isn’t off to the races just yet but they do still look very dangerous. It really all comes down to who is on the hill. Noah Syndergaard is leading the way with 8 wins, when Matt Harvey is on the hill watch out. You never quite know what you’re going to get out of the 3-7 slinger. In fact, it’s getting so bad that some players are starting to speak out about his downfalls.

Sleeper – Seattle Mariners (+1,500)

The Seattle Mariners are a feel good story thus far. The team has battled back from a downfall year in 2015, where Robinson Cano just lost all momentum and the team fell by the hip early. It got so bad that they cleaned house and canned their general manager and manager in the dugout. Enter Jerry Dipoto and Scott Servais. These two have transformed the M’s into a winning ball club. They currently lead the AL West with a 28-18 record and are one of the hottest teams in the American League at the two-month point.
