2016 March Madness Biggest Upset

As if you didn’t already know, the biggest disappointment of the 2016 tournament belongs to Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans. MSU were knocked out of the first round by the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders by a score of 90-81. It wasn’t just another high seeded group getting bounced by a Cinderella though. No, it was a 2-seed that many thought would win the whole thing getting destroyed in the very first round. It was the sound of brackets breaking across the United States of America. It was the sound of heartbreak, joy and negligence all wrapped in one.

The repercussions of Michigan State’s first round loss

When top seeded MSU fell to the Blue Zoo, it wasn’t just you and your pool that felt the affects. 97% of all brackets entered into ESPN had MSU winning that game. The sweet and hilarious justice for those that chose a champion wisely, is that of that 97% a total of 22% had the Spartans in the final. And once half your final bracket is broken, so to are your chances.

Head coach Tom Izzo was complimentary of his players and said, if his kid grew up like them – he’d be a happy man. The team will always be remembered in white, silver and green circles though as a massive disappointment. They looked sharp basically all year and then when it mattered most, they were dominated by a 15-seed.

The Spartans shot 66.7% from the free throw line and turned the ball over 14 times. They entered the night favored by -18 points and were basically just flat out manhandled. MSU also entered the game -7,000 on the moneyline. A bettor in Las Vegas was said to have put down a $265 flier on the Blue Raiders and walked away with $5,300.

Prior to their March Madness defeat, the Spartans topped Purdue, Maryland, and Ohio State to win the Big Ten title. Which will now be looked upon as the lone bright spot in an extremely horrifying year.
