Matthew Stafford in action

Green Bay Packers (odds to win division: -155)

Aaron Rodgers and crew are eager to reclaim the NFC North division title. The Packers had a four-year reign atop the division until the Vikings snapped their streak in 2015. But with Jordy Nelson back in harness after missing all of last season with a knee injury and Eddie Lacy’s physique closer to looking more of that of an elite running back and less of a baby elephant’s, Rodgers will be surrounded by better talent this time around. All signs point to a solid season for the Packers.

Minnesota Vikings (odds to win division: +175)

Adrian Peterson can’t stay superhuman all his life and the Vikings are hoping this isn’t the season, wherein Purple Jesus will have that significant decline. That said, the passing game should only get better for Minnesota with the steady improvement of third-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater under center and the young pair of Stefon Diggs and rookie Laquon Treadwell down field. The Vikings’ defense is also expected to come up big this season after limiting foes last season to just 18.9 points per game—fifth best mark in the NFL.

Chicago Bears (odds to win division: +850)

How will the Bears contend with the likes of the Packers and the Vikings? Well, Chicago needs Jay Cutler to play like he’s worth all that money ASAP. Otherwise, the Bears will continue to suck and Stephen A. Smith will only have more fuel for his fire of hate on Cutler. Cutler is 33 and remains with good options to throw at with Alshon Jeffery and second-year receiver Kevin White, who missed all of last season due to injury. Jeremy Langford will get the bulk of work in the backfield with Matt Forte gone. While talented, Langford is almost the only one left to do the rushing chores in a thin Chicago backfield. Still, there’s a lot of work needed for the Bears before we even consider them a force in the division.

Detroit Lions (odds to win division: +1,200)

Megatron is gone, which must really suck for Matthew Stafford. That said, Stafford is the kind of quarterback Detroit can still count on despite coming off a down season. The offensive line was bad in 2015 but the experience gained that year of this young unit plus the addition of another first-round pick to the group should help Stafford feel more secure. The defense gave up 25 points per game last season and without notable moves to address the problem over the offseason, the Tigers will have a hard time rising to the top of the division.
